Journaling Lent: Day 22, Jonah's Prayer

Today's reflection is from He Reads Truth and Jonah's Prayer.

As Jonah was in the belly of the fish he prayed,

"I cried out for help in the belly of Sheol. You heard my voice...I've been banished from your sight yet I will look once more to your Holy Temple...but You raised my life from the my life was fading away I remembered Yahweh. I will fulfill what I have vowed." Then God commanded the fish to spit Jonah out.

Again the story of Jonah has striking similarities with Jesus death.

"I have been banished from Your sight." Jonah was in the belly of the whale for 3 days as Christ was in the "bowels of the Earth" for 3 days as well. Out of the light, in darkness.

When I read Jonah pray, "I remembered Yahweh," I think Jonah is also saying, "I remembered Truth."

The Truth of who God is. His promises. His providence. His grace that he would show on Jonah and later Nineveh. Jonah remembers Truth then he commits to do what he vowed - that which God asked him.

Then God drew him out of the fish just as God drew Jesus out of the tomb...then what happened next? Salvation.
